“How did it go?” Jade asked as Karen and Ty breezed into the SCU an hour after leaving HMP Leeds.

Karen nodded. “So-so. We rattled his cage, and that was my intention. I bet he was on the phone to Lee the moment we left. He’s a racist, egotistical thug, and has eaten more than his fair share of pies!”

Jade and a few others laughed at Karen’s assessment.

“He made a racist poke at Ty. I’m proud of him for not rising to the taunt or backing down either. Harman tried his best to be the big man but fell at the first hurdle.”

A few officers nodded in Ty’s direction, offering their support.

“There are a few updates for you,” Ed began. “We had a call from a shopkeeper following the press appeal. He recognised the description of the BMW. On the night of Michael’s murder, the shopkeeper discovered the car parked in his usual unloading spot. Out of frustration, he wrote a note and left it on the windscreen of the BMW. The next morning, he found the note crumpled on the floor and the BMW gone.”

“He didn’t see the driver at any point?” Karen questioned.

“I’m afraid not.”

“Thanks, Ed. Anything else?” Karen asked, looking round her team.

Preet swivelled in her chair. “The mobile number you asked me to check out is a pay-as-you-go number. Whoever called Henry Beavis remained anonymous. Probably a burner phone.”

Deep down, Karen suspected that would have been the case, but it bothered her. Following protocol, she had informed her boss, and the decision had been made that if Henry or any member of her team received a similar call again then they would need a risk assessment of Karen’s situation both in and out of the office.

Karen thanked the team before heading off to the kitchen to rustle up a coffee. Finding the suspect was proving harder than expected. They had scoured hours of CCTV footage tracking Michael’s route from his house to the industrial estate. Her team had checked and double-checked every CCTV camera, Ring doorbell, ANPR, and traffic camera. Despite their hard work, they still hadn’t found a single clear image of the driver. As she sipped her coffee on the way back to her office, the elusive description of their suspect remained vague. A non-Caucasian, wearing a baseball cap, thirties to forties, broad shoulders and tall based on the CCTV footage of him retrieving the petrol can from his car. That was it. It described thousands of men up and down the country.

Settling into her seat, she switched on her computer. Tracing the money was proving just as hard. The bank accounts found in William’s and Jean’s names held less than fifteen thousand pounds in them. Had William spent the rest providing care for Jean? Or was the money sitting in another account yet to be discovered? Enquiries into bank accounts under the names of David or Mary Cooper had come up empty as well. Perhaps the accounts were overseas? That being the case, it would prove a challenge to uncover them.
